This is an advanced undergraduate course in the Retailing and Consumer Sciences Program. Students in the course have academic and applied learning experiences along with retailing career aspirations. Students are trained as retail generalists with diverse interests in merchandising, marketing, product development, digital, sports marketing, entrepreneurship, and sustainable consumption careers. Our students have consumer marketing, retail practice, and fashion apparel merchandising training that has allowed them to develop innovative and practical solutions to retailing challenges. The students in this course are focused specifically on social media and its use in building awareness and engagement between consumers and brands/products/services.

The final project deliverables will typically include:

  1. A 15-minute presentation of key findings and recommendations, and
  2. A detailed social media audit and plan including their research, analysis, insights, and recommendations.

Project Examples

Requirements

Beginning in February, students in groups of 4-5 (12 groups) will work on researching and examining your competitive landscape, as well as conducting analyses of your organization to come up with a compelling and actionable business strategy.

The students will be asked to:

  • Conduct social media audits
  • Assess opportunities to open new markets or better serve an existing market
  • Provide positioning strategies for target markets
  • Develop a social media implementation plan
  • Create social media content

Specifically, the general course assignment will be to complete the following activities:

  • Conduct an audit of our current social media presence.
  • Develop strategies for improving our online presence by recommending programs, tools, methods of engagement, social channels, or communication pieces.
  • Develop strategies for increasing engagement on various public accounts, blogs, or other marketing assets.
  • Conduct an assessment of the effectiveness of current communication channel(s).
  • Evaluate the target market segment(s a)nd develop a target customer profile/persona.
  • Identify best practices within your current or recommended market segment to achieve a larger market share.
  • Develop a 6-month social media plan.
  • Creat example social media posts based on our branding guidelines
  • Integrate inietiatives and opportunities that involve positive social/environmental impact.

  • Market segmentation
  • Cause-related marketing
  • Experiential marketing
  • Marketing communications
  • Branding

Based on the above areas of analysis, students will include short and/or long-term strategy recommendations in their report.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
